The great effectiveness of hyaluronic acid
Without any doubt, hyaluronic acid is nowadays one of the most frequently used substances while correcting certain aesthetic problems. Over the years, the skin loses its look and firmness, and as we attempt keeping them we use creams and an infinity of other products with only one goal: letting time go by without leaving visible ageing signs on our face.
Wrinkles, expression lines, crow’s feet… there’s always some sort of signs that display the course of time. Many times, people would like to change their appearance, but the simple fact of hearing about the surgery makes them scared, that’s why they keep their look instead of transforming it into what they want. Not long ago, we were talking about collagen, and today we will talk about another very current and extended topic like it is the treatment using injections of hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide from the group of the glycosaminoglycans, meaning it’s a sugar molecule that can be naturally be found in our body. It is usually concentrated within the articulations, cartilage, as well as the skin, and due to the course of time, our body keeps consuming it and, slowly but steadily, the concentration of hyaluronic acid drops. It’s actually used quite a lot within medicine, for example in fields like traumatology, ophthalmology, and also for aesthetic treatment.
Its main properties are hydration, given that hyaluronic acid has the capacity of storing great amounts of water around it, and its characteristics while filling tissues, like for example wrinkles or expression lines.
The concentration of hyaluronic acid keeps dropping as we get older, making the skin look dehydrated and, as a direct consequence, leading to the formation of wrinkles and furrows. This is where medicine comes into play, as medical advances allowed proving that the injection of hyaluronic acid encourages the recovery of a way younger appearance.
The product can be of animal or plant origin, this will depend on the manufacturer and the provider of each clinic, as well as the purpose it’s going to be used for.
Application
Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our body, making the treatment 100% biocompatible.
The treatment normally takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour to be performed, depending on the treated areas and the amount of product that needs to be injected. In some cases, local anaesthesia will be used to make the treatment as painless as possible for the patient. The application method is the same that’s used for collagen injections. The product infiltration is performed through a very fine syringe, which can be adapted to every type of treatment, and the wrinkles or the area to be treated are filled in order to regain the tone and the smooth and tight appearance of the treated area.
After the product is applied, the skin will show swelling depending on the performed treatment. It will gradually disappear, and we’ll be able to see the real results afterwards. Normally, ice is applied in order to make the inflammation vanish, and after a few days the treated area will have a much better appearance and you will verify the excellent results.
Advantages of hyaluronic acid
One of the main advantages hyaluronic acid offers is its easy application, since a single 30 minute session manages beating those unsightly ageing signs and obtaining excellent results.
The pricing. Without any doubt, whenever a patient wants to correct a few small aesthetic problems and hears about the cost of the aesthetic surgeries he would need, he is often disappointed. Hyaluronic acid allows the performance of an aesthetic treatment with great results at a cost of around 300€, a price that includes a personal study, evaluation and follow-up after the treatment, as well as the product injection itself.
One of the advantages compared to collagen is the durability of the results, which in some cases, also depending on the treated area, can reach one year or even more.
Allergy tests are not necessary, the chance of an allergic reaction or a rejection of the product are minimal, only an insignificant percentage compared to the great results obtained through this treatment.
Disadvantages of hyaluronic acid
Probably the main disadvantage of this treatment is the fact that its effects aren’t permanent, it usually is split into multiple sessions, and the durability of the results ranges between 9 months and 1 year. That’s why usually a follow-up of the result is performed, and if you wish to extend the durability over a greater period of time, appointments with the specialist in charge are arranged in order to do so.
There are some side effects, but they are usually of low impact, like irritation, redness, swelling or hypersensitivity of the treated area. Normally, these side effects slowly disappear after the injection.
Its use is not recommended for pregnant women, minor children, or in case the patient needs to undergo a radiofrequency treatment.
Lastly, it can be mentioned that hyaluronic acid has been getting more and more market share compared to collagen, and that it indeed is a great alternative for those who wish to regain a strong facial skin without having to undergo an aesthetic surgery and be exposed to the risk it involves.
