What is acne? ¿Qué es el acné?
Acne is a disease of the skin that affects the hair follicles and their sebaceous glands. For various reasons they produce excessive secretions that, combined with the dead cells, cork the outlet channel of the hair.
The plugging of the pores encourages the growth of bacteria and the infection with pus, which leads to the uncontrolled spreading of the acne. Afterwards, the skin swells and the active lesion appears, often leaving scars. The most commonly affected areas are face, back, shoulders, arms and chest.
The exact cause of this is unknown, although it’s known that it’s due to hormonal, hereditary or genetic, environmental and dietary factors. Acne can affect all ages, from birth to mature age, even above age 40.
The most common age for the onset is during adolescence, between 12 and 16 years, due to hormonal changes in both sexes that have an effect on women and men in the same way. In this young population, acne has a great impact because besides being annoying and painful. it’s embarrassing aesthetically and makes for insecurities which at the same time can lead to a social retraction.
There’s one type of acne, the cosmetic one, that affects women more commonly as it’s caused by the use of fat containing creams and makeups.
